Sample reading for a fictional reader

The Depth Reading

Prepared for

Mara

This is a sample. Mara is a fictional reader, and her answers were written to show what a reading looks like. Here is the first of its nine parts. A real reading is written from your own answers.

Your persona

  • Persona

You described yourself at work as “the one who keeps everything moving”, and said people often tell you how calm you are under pressure. Jung used the word persona, after the mask worn by actors in ancient theatre, for the face we develop to meet the world. A persona isn’t false. It is how we get along, and yours appears to be a capable one.

What may be worth noticing is the cost you hinted at. You wrote that after a long week you feel “hollow, like I’ve been performing”. One way to see this is that the role of the calm organiser has become so reliable that other parts of you rarely get a turn. Jung was less concerned with dropping the persona than with not mistaking it for the whole person. The question your answers raise is not whether to stop being capable, but whether there is anywhere in your week where you aren’t required to be.

You also mentioned that friends outside work describe you differently: “funnier, messier, slower to answer messages”. That contrast is useful. It suggests the persona is something you put on for a setting rather than all you are, and that the other Mara already has places to live.
